Alternative Prom From Gretchen Lade, a special education art, math and English teacher at Enid High School in Enid, Oklahoma: "I teach students with moderate to severe mental retardation. Last year a mom of one of my students requested that we have an alternative senior prom for the more severely challenged students. The regular school prom that is on a Saturday from 9 PM to 12 AM is too difficult for some because of the time and crowd. My colleagues and I put our heads together and came up with a Wish Upon A Star Prom. We held it at a local church, the parents were in charge of the refreshments, my son ran the music, we had a volunteer photographer and we danced and partied from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM on a Saturday night right before graduation. We invited peer tutors and our non-disabled peers from the high school to attend as well. While some wore tuxes and formals, others wore their Sunday best. Our non-disabled peers sponsored every one of my students making sure that each had a corsage or boutonniere. Words cannot describe how much fun everyone had! Our non-disabled peers all said they had more fun at our prom than at the EHS one! The Wish Upon A Star Prom is now an annual event." |
